Tilos Radio Kicked Off the Air

Hey Budapest pals! How come I gotta learn about this 30-day suspension of Tilos from Prague resident (and ex-Prognosite) Doug Arellanes? Weren't some of you telling me on Jan. 2 that the Christian-offending comments in question were uttered by an expat friend of everybody's. What is the scoop, people?

For what it's worth, I'm working on a couple of projects with Tilos' Akos Maroy, so we're in pretty close contact. But it's not like the friggin' BBC didn't cover it either...

Yes, just before arriving at Tom Popper's Xmas party Barango (PJ Cresswell's punk rock tuba playing dark shadow) was drunk and filling in with some buddies at Tilos and said "Crap! I would exterminate all the Christians!". He was drunk - as always - and the topic was these huge wooden crosses that have been erected by a new right wing youth movement called the "Jobbik" (play on the words "right" and "better".)

The issue blew up Big Time in the Magyar Nemzet, wound up in parliament, and the radio apologized, as did Barango. The Government Media Committee voted that there was no need to close Tilos down. No matter, the "Polgari Korok" (Orban's 'civil circles') demonstrated in front of Tilos on Kinizsi utca about ten days ago. The crowd called for punishment of Tilos. As expected, the speakers (Lovas Istavan, for example, saying the "minority is ruling the majority" etc, etc...) equated "Anti Christian" with Jewish and the next thing ya know some guys in folky Hun Hats were burning an Israeli flag. So another big stink goes up, Orban (and his flunky TV station, Hir TV) declares that it was a provocation, that these guys were from Tilos, but backs off when it is pointed out that the police had already taken them in for questioning.

As always, it is one of those cases where Orban's boys want to give the EU a few second thoughts about their new members. ALso, the SZDSZ has been obsessive about the theme of "Hate Speech" and this is the first time the right wing has jumped on the 'hate-speech' wagon. Although Orban's civil circles are generally composed of relatively normal - and deeply misled - folks, these demos always attract the loony nationalist fringe.

Barango is OK if you are wondering. A bit shaken, but OK.

Oh, boy...I loved the article on the Tilos Radio thing...and the last line about misled ..oops..deeply misled civil circles.
I love dimwits who think they are experts about everything going on in this country. A couple of years ago they didn't even know where Europe was..now after having been here for a few months they know more than the people who spent the last 50 years here. Congratulations for being so smart...but then again..if you like that Barangolo guy....it explains everything about you.
